Potassium Sulfate

Application Category Potassium Sulfate End Use.
Glass manufacturing Potassium Sulfate is a key ingredient in the creation of specialized glass. It is used as a fluxing agent to lower the melting temperature of silica (SiO2) in the production of glass.
Ceramics Potassium Sulfate is used as a flux in glaze, a flux in ceramic bodies, a flocculant in ceramic slips, and for surface modification.
Oil and gas industry It is utilized in drilling fluids as a shale stabilizerwhen drilling through water-sensitive clays and shales. It isalso used as a weighting agent, which increases the density of the drilling fluid.
Textile industry It is used as a mordant in dyeing and bleaching procedures to help in the appropriate bonding of colors with textiles, especially when dyeing natural fibers.
Fire extinguisher Potassium Sulfate is used in the manufacturing of dry chemical powder extinguishers.
Metal Finishing Potassium Sulfate is used as an electrolyte in electroplating, which makes it easier for different metals to be efficiently deposited onto the surface of metal.
Cement and
Gypsum
It is used as an accelerator to increase the hydration rate of cement. The main ingredients that give concrete its strength are Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH), which is formed more quickly when potassium ions (K+) combine with cement particles.
The setting time of gypsum is accelerated by the addition of potassium sulfate. Potassium Sulfate produces gypsum board (drywall), plasters, and other gypsum-based products more quickly by interacting with gypsum to speed up its setting time.

Animal Nutrition It is used as a feed additive in animal nutrition due to its rich potassium and sulfur content.
Chemical Industry It is used as a raw material in the chemical industry for synthesizing other potassium or sulfur compounds, such as Potassium Aluminium Sulfate and Potassium Persulfate.
Food Industry Potassium Sulfate is used as a pH buffer in various food products. It acts as a firming agent, influencingthe consistency and texture of food products. (The INS number is INS No. 515(i) and E number is 515(i))
Cosmetic Industry It is used as a functional property, such as a pH adjuster, a viscosity controlling agent, and a bulking agent.
Pharmaceutical Industry It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient in some medications and supplements, and as a raw material for producing other potassium-based compounds.
Chemical Analysis Potassium Sulfate Reagent grades are useful in the analysis of chemicals in laboratories.
Defence Use It is used as a flash suppressant in artillery propellant charges, helping to reduce muzzle flash, flareback, and the overpressure from blasts.
It is used for a defensive purpose.

Potassium Sulfate Structure:

Two positively charged potassium ions (K+) and one negatively charged sulfate ion (SO42-) combine to form Potassium Sulfate. The image shows the structure of Potassium Sulfate.

Potassium Sulfate Production Process:

In the industrial method, the reaction between sulfuric acid and Potassium Chloride produces Potassium Sulfate. This method is the most commonly used in the industrial process.
2KCL + H2SO4 K2SO4 + HCL.
